Ecotherapy is an approach that rests on the idea that being in nature is required for our mental and physical health. It explores how our relationship with nature is an essential part of our humanity.

Ecotherapy affirms that to be truly healthy and whole, we must use it as a therapeutic method to improve our well-being. It has ancient roots in indigenous people’s knowledge of the healing powers of nature and practices of honoring the Earth.

Numerous evidence-based studies prove that Ecotherapy can:

  • lift depression
  • release stress and anxiety
  • improve sleep
  • reduce substance abuse
  • diminish mental fatigue
  • lessen eating disorder symptoms
  • strengthen the immune system
  • lessen post-traumatic stress disorder
  • and much more

Ecotherapy is an excellent fit if you:

– Are going through a significant transition and need some grounding and clarity
– Are overwhelmed at work or home and want rejuvenation, calm, and peace
– Need to clear your mind and find solutions to your problems
– Know that being in nature is healing and want more of it
– Would like motivation to exercise
– Feel uncomfortable about going outside alone and would like this to change

– Need assistance with substance abuse

  • For resilience. According to a 2018 review of studiesTrusted Source, children living in rural areas tended to have greater resilience to stress, higher levels of self-worth, and improved concentration and cognitive abilities. Time outdoors can also promote creativity and strengthen their sense of self.

  • For post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The same review found support for ecotherapy as a promising intervention for veterans living with post-traumatic stress. A 2017 review emphasizes the potential benefits of nature therapy for symptoms of PTSD, particularly for those who have difficulty following other treatment programs or find them unhelpful.

  • For nervous system recovery. Research from 2010 Trusted Source suggests that when you’re exposed to stress, the sounds of nature may help your nervous system recover faster than sounds of traffic and other common city noises.

  • For improved well-being. A 2020 review trusted Source suggests gardening can promote emotional well-being. Research from 2019 also supports the benefits of gardening for patients at a psychiatric hospital. Many reported better moods, increased calm, feelings of belonging, and a deeper understanding of their mental      health.

Though ecotherapy is an emerging field, the consensus among experts remains consistent: Spending time in nature will have a positive impact on your mental health.
